August Tree Actions: Preparing Your Cambridge Site for Autumn

August is here in Cambridge, and while the school holidays are winding down, the garden work isn’t stopping. The heat can be intense, and trees are showing signs of stress after a long growing season. For commercial sites, this month is about managing the late summer risks and getting a head start on autumn preparations.

 

Here’s what we’re focusing on for your site this month:

Final Hedge Trims 

Growth slows down significantly in August, making it the perfect time for a final tidy-up before autumn. A clean hedge now ensures your boundaries look professional for the rest of the year. Just remember, while nesting season is winding down, some late-nesting birds can still be active. We always do a thorough check before cutting to stay compliant with wildlife laws.

 

Drought Stress Management 

If we’ve had a dry spell, trees can struggle. Young trees or those in paved areas might need extra watering or mulching to survive. We can assess which specimens are struggling and advise on care to prevent them from dying back over winter.

Storm Readiness 

Summer storms don’t stop in August. Heavy rain combined with full canopies can lead to unexpected failures. We recommend checking for deadwood or weak branches that might snap under the weight of wet leaves. It’s better to remove them now than deal with damage later.

OPM and Pest Watch 

Oak Processionary Moth (OPM) caterpillars can still be active into late August. If you spot the white, silky nests on oaks, keep your distance. Our team handles removal safely. We also check for other pests that thrive in the warm weather.

Autumn Planning 

Now is the time to plan for leaf fall. If you have gutters or drains that get blocked easily, we can discuss crown thinning to reduce the volume of leaves dropping in October and November.
