Hello again from the team at MG Tree Surgery!

July is in full swing here in Cambridge, and the heat is really starting to kick in. The trees are at their absolute peak, casting beautiful shade, but for commercial property managers, this month brings a unique mix of challenges. It’s the time when growth slows slightly, but the risks from dry spells and heavy foliage increase.

Here’s what we can tackle on your site this month:

Emergency Storm Prep

July can bring sudden, intense thunderstorms. With trees fully loaded with leaves, they act like massive sails in high winds. If you have noticed any weak branches or cracks in your trees, now is the time to get them removed. Let us prevent you having to deal with emergency call-outs when a summer storm hits your premises, car park or office buildings.

Managing the “Green Fall”

Even in summer, trees drop twigs and leaves, especially if they’ve been stressed by dry weather. These can create slip hazards on pavements and clog up drainage channels. Regular clearance keeps your site safe for staff and visitors and prevents waterlogging during those afternoon downpours.

Pest Control: OPM and Beyond

Oak Processionary Moth (OPM) caterpillars are a serious concern in July. Their hairs can cause severe skin and respiratory reactions. If you spot the distinctive white, silky nests on oak trees, do not touch them. Our team is trained to identify and safely remove these nests in line with Forestry Commission guidelines. We also keep an eye out for other summer pests that might be affecting tree health.

Hedge Top-Ups

Growth might slow down compared to June, but hedges still need attention. A quick trim now keeps them looking sharp for the summer season and ensures they don’t block security lights or CCTV cameras as the evenings get darker later in the month.

Water Stress Checks

With the potential for dry spells, we keep an eye on younger trees and newly planted specimens. They might need extra watering or mulching to survive the heatwave.

At MG Tree Surgery, we know that summer work requires a different approach. We’re here to keep your site safe, compliant, and looking great, even in the heat. Give us a ring if you need a quick assessment or a pest check!
